Vintage Martin Guitars
The Martin Guitar Company dates back to the late 1700's in Germany, which was the era in which Christian Martin was born in 1796. The young C.F. Martin learned how to build guitars when he was 15 years old. Unfortunately for the country of Germany the guilds in that country put Martin in a position where he felt his craft was restricted, and he left Germany for the freedom of the United States in 1833. He started his guitar craft in the US in New York and after five years moved his business, the Martin Company to Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
The Martin Guitar Company implemented many innovations in the 1800's. One of the innovations was the unique "X" bracing system for the guitar top. This system accounts for the some of the unique tone of Martin guitars which still exists today in newer Martin guitars. In 1888 the Martin guitar legacy passed to Frank Martin grandson of the founder C.F.Martin. Frank Martin would collaborate with Harry Hunt who was known for the "Dreadnaught" guitar design.
The most popular of the Martin Guitars is the Martin D-15 which is more affordable and based on a design from the 1940's. The guitars are made of maghoney and use a rosewood fretboard. The Martin HD-28 is another popular guitar and the top is made of Stika spruce, and the sides of rosewood. The neck of the HD-28 is made of mahogeny with an ebony fretboard..
